Study Says 1 in 10 Girls in Florida says She's Been Raped

In a shocking revelation, new research reveals that one out of every 10 girls in Florida says she's been raped.

The startling stat is part of the report "Status of Florida Girls," issued Wednesday by the Delores Barr Weaver Policy Center. The study, for which 27,000 middle school and high school girls were surveyed, also reveals that one in three Florida girls don't feel safe in school.

The report also reveals that underage girls in Duval County are far more likely to give birth than any other county in the state. In 2018, 169 Duval County girls under the age of 18 had babies. The county with the next highest number is Clay County, where 19 girls gave birth in 2018.

What would explain the dramatic difference in births from one county to the next? What makes Florida residents different from people living in other states?
