Bay Area Bridges: New Toll System Goes Into Effect Friday

Starting this Friday, January 1st, an all electronic system will be put into effect at all of the Bay Area toll booths. Moving forward, drivers will be sent a monthly invoice online or in the mail. Those that use Fastrak will see no difference in billing.

This new toll system will affect the following bridges in the Bay Area:

  • Antioch, Benicia-Martinez
  • Carquinez
  • Dumbarton
  • Richmond-San Rafael
  • San Francisco-Oakland Bay
  • San Mateo-Hayward

According to NBC Bay Area:

"Drivers who do not have FasTrak or a License Plate Account -- and who do not use the online one-time payment option -- will be required to return invoices with payment within 30 days. Those who neglect to return payment within 30 days will receive a "Notice of Toll Evasion" with a $25 penalty for each toll crossing."

Additionally, if drivers do not pay after 60 days:

"Customers who do not return payment after a second notice may have a hold put on their vehicle registration by the DMV and/or have the amount owed referred to a collection agency."

Due to COVID-19, toll booths originally suspended cash payments in March of 2020.

Fastrak definitely sounds like a good idea right about now!
