The Weeknd Explains The Meaning Behind His Full-Face Bandages

The Weeknd is opening up about the meaning behind his full face of bandages since the release of his most recent album, After Hours.

In a previous interview with Variety back in April, The Weeknd explained of the character who fans have now watched go from a few bandages to a full face of bandages, "This character is having a really bad night, and you can come with own interpretation of what it is."

Now, ahead of his performance during the Super Bowl Halftime Show, he explained in a new Variety interview of the true meaning behind the bandages, "The significance of the entire head bandages is reflecting on the absurd culture of Hollywood celebrity and people manipulating themselves for superficial reasons to please and be validated."

He added, "It’s all a progression and we watch The Character’s storyline hit heightened levels of danger and absurdity as his tale goes on."

Aside from his upcoming Super Bowl Halftime Show performance, The Weeknd recently announced his new "After Hours Tour" dates, set for 2022, after being postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The tour kicks off in January 2022 in Vancouver, making several more stops in Canada before making its way to the US on January 21 in St. Paul, Minnesota. The Weeknd will then stop in cities including Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, Boston, Brooklyn, Nashville, Dallas, Seattle, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Philadelphia, Las Vegas and more.

In addition to the tour announcement, The Weeknd also announced his The Highlights, which according to a press release is "a way to present some of The Weeknd's most notable works in one place" and provides "a new listener a rich foray into some of the iconic artist's best and favorite work." The Highlights drops on February 5th.
