Hotshot firefighters are quitting due to low wages and lack of benefits.

According to NBC Bay Area:

"Hotshot firefighters say they're risking their lives for a starting wage lower than what many high schoolers earn at a fast food restaurant... The federal firefighters are often working side-by-side with crews from Cal Fire and other agencies who often make double what they do."

These firefighters reportedly start out at $13.45/hour, despite the nature of work and incredible risks they take on the job.

According to the USDA, Hotshot crews got their name from working on the hottest part of the fire.
