Remembering Nipsey Hussle: LA Gangs March For Peace In His Honor

Last Sunday the world was stunned when rapper, philanthropist, and business man, Nipsey Hussle was gunned down in front of his Marathon Clothing Store in his hometown of Los Angeles. I remember where I was when I first heard the news. I was constantly loading my twitter feed and checking TMZ, hoping this was just a sick rumor. The hip hop community as a whole will never forget where they were when they heard the tragic news.

"I say it's worth it, I won't say it's fair. Find your purpose or you wasting air." -Nipsey Hussle

Not only was Nipsey Hussle an undeniable great rapper, he was a real business man who constantly gave back, making himself a pillar in his own community. In his early career, Nipsey immediately believed in himself, inspiring artists of all genres to do the same. He owned masters to all of his records. He once sold 1,000 copies of his mixtape Crenshaw for $100 each. This inspired another powerful and successful business man to purchase 100 copies. Fast forward, Nipsey Hussle’s 2018 debut album Victory Lap was nominated for a Grammy for Best Rap Album. It's now forecast to reach the highest-charting position yet. With his growing success, Nipsey never forgot where he came from. He constantly worked to change his hometown, Crenshaw district of South Los Angeles. From investing in real estate where his Marathon Clothing Store stood and bringing a GQ photo shoot to the place he loved. Thousands have recently signed a petition to rename the corner of Slauson and Crenshaw to "Nipsey Hussle Blvd".

There’s no question to why Nipsey Hussle’s death is taking such a toll on all of us.

This past Friday afternoon we were able to see just how much Nipsey affected his community. His murder sparked a truce between rival LA gangs as hundreds got together in Los Angeles for a unity walk. Its been reported that on the previous Thursday, gang leaders from Watts, Compton, and Inglewood all met up to discuss a cease-fire.

I’m still having a hard time accepting Nipsey’s death myself. However, seeing something as extraordinary as LA gangs coming together to march for peace in his honor, does bring light to these darkest moments. Nipsey Hussle is survived by his two children and girlfriend Lauren London. A public memorial service is tentatively set for Thursday at the Los Angeles’ Staples Center.
