Friday night’s Mega Millions jackpot is already at $970 million and climbing and if you score the lucky ticket there are certain things you need to do.
First, breathe. Lotto officials advise winners to relax, gather yourself and sign your ticket immediately. They also say to put it in a safe spot.
Next find a reputable financial advisor. Depending on where you buy the ticket you have between 180 days and a year to claim your winnings.
Get ready for the publicity. Winners can only remain anonymous in 6 states.
Pay Uncle Sam. The government takes 24% but ends up taking less if you go for the annuity instead of the lump sum.
Get paid out. Payment usually takes between 1-2 weeks.
