City Enforces Stay-at-Home Orders with Roadblocks

At least one city in the U.K. has taken the enforcement of its stay-at-home orders to the next level.

Police in the Scottish city of Fife have set up roadblocks on all inbound streets so they can stop and question every motorist who tries to enter. "There are many people in our community who are at high risk," says West Fife Officer Douglas Chapman. "By flouting the strict guidelines set out by the government, you could be heightening that risk to serious levels. It could be your mum, your dad, your granny we are talking about."

Despite the good intentions, residents have been complaining about the long waits they've been experiencing as officers question each driver. However, Chapman says the roadblocks are necessary. "The advice given by the U.K. and Scottish governments is not optional," he says. "It must be followed to make sure we protect the most vulnerable and our health service. If we keep to the rules, we’ll get through this."

How would you feel if the U.S. government started checking drivers in random road blocks? Is martial law required to fully contain the virus?
