TSA Reports Spike in Gun Seizures at Airport Checkpoints

While the number of people traveling by air has dropped dramatically during the coronavirus pandemic, the percentage of people attempting to bring guns aboard planes has skyrocketed.

That's according to the Transportation Security Administration, which reports 58 guns were seized at checkpoints between March 22nd to April 22nd. While that number doesn't even come close to the 346 that were found over the same period last year, it should be noted there are 95 percent fewer people flying now. That means one in every 80,000 travelers is attempting to carry a weapon onto a plane -- about 2.7 times higher than last year's rate.

Jeffrey Price, an aviation expert at Denver's Metropolitan State University, blames the spike in a recent uptick in gun sales, an "apocalypse mindset" and more thorough TSA agents. With fewer travelers to check, screeners can "take a lot more time with each person," he says.

Does it bother you that there might always be this many guns on planes -- just fewer people were getting caught? Why do more people want to own guns because there's a virus pandemic?
