In just 12 trips around the sun, Lonnie Chavis has experienced a whole lot of racism.
TheThis Is Usactor, who plays Randall on the NBC comedy-drama, penned an essay forPeoplemagazine this week, asking, "My life matters, but does it?"
Chavis notes how he's "treated very poorly by security or entrance checkers" and is mistaken in public for other Black actors. He then revealed a police encounter that left him wondering if the officer would kill his father.
"If you don't understand what's going on in the world, then understand this: This is what the world looks like for me. A 12-year-old Black boy. This is my America," says Chavis, who makes a plea for change.
