In an open letter in Vogue Magazine, Demi Lovato recently spoke about the injustices facing the Black community. As Lovato has been quarantining during the pandemic she’s watched the many killings of black men in astonishment and even hated that she shared the same skin color as the people accused of committing the“heinous crimes.”
Lovato, who grew up listening to Aretha Franklin and Whitney Houston, suddenly realized that even though her career was based on the music from those female icons she had also benefited from white privilege.
“I also felt like I wanted to call every person of color that I knew and apologize, which I know isn’t the right thing to do either,”said Demi.
Throughout the pandemic, Demi has been learning about herself and how she should advocate for others, especially people of color and those who suffer from mental illness. Demi says,“In short, 2020 has been a year of growth.”
Up until this point, what has 2020 taught you?
