Take Advantage Of San Francisco's Public Transportation This New Year's Eve

This New Year's Eve, San Francisco's public transit is offering people free rides and extended hours. So save your money from the inevitable surge prices on Uber and Lyft and get around the city safely thanks to these special New Year's Eve public transit services.

BART will run until 3 AM on New Year's Eve but will operate on a special schedule starting at 8pm. This schedule includes skipping Embarcadero Station on the Antioch and Richmond lines. You'll have to catch these lines from the Montgomery Street Station. Dublin/Pleasanton and South Fremont/Warm Springs will skip the Montgomery Street Station but you can catch these lines at Embarcadero Station. These lines will also not be stopping at West Oakland and instead go straight to Lake Merritt Station where you can transfer to an SF bound train if you need to get to West Oakland. According to BART's website, these changes will reduce the amount of people on the platforms.

Muni (trains, buses, and cable cars) will be giving free rides on New Year's Eve from 8 PM to 5AM on all lines and routes. The fare gates will be open so be sure to not tag your Clipper card or activate a MuniMobile ticket or else you'll be charged. There will be reroutes around the Ferry Building starting at 10 PM to avoid the large crowds for the city sponsored fireworks show off of The Embarcadero. You can get information on these temporary service changes here.

Caltrain will be offering free service after 8 PM and includes special pre- and post-fireworks show trains. The last train leaves San Francisco at 2 AM. Just like on Muni, make sure you don't tag your Clipper card! See the full timetable here.

SamTrans will be offering free service from 8 PM to 5AM. The buses will operate on a regular weekday schedule on Tuesday, December 31st and switch to a Sunday schedule starting on Wednesday, January 1st. The timetables for all routes can be found here.

AC Transit is also offering free rides on any bus from 8PM to 5AM.

This is a great way to save money and more importantly, to keep people unfit to drive off of the streets. Spread the word and don't let people drive home drunk. Look out for yourself and others this holiday and have a Happy New Year!
