The first case of the omicron COVID-19 variant in the United States has been detected in San Francisco. During a press conference, Dr. Fauci said the person was fully vaccinated and had just come back from South Africa.

Governor Gavin Newsom went to Twitter to say,

CA’s large-scale testing and early detection systems have found the Omicron COVID-19 variant in California. We should assume that it’s in other states as well. There’s no reason to panic--but we should remain vigilant. That means get vaccinated. Get boosted. Wear a mask indoors.

As of now, the Biden administration has restricted travel from South Africa. CDC officials are trying to have overseas travelers test before boarding flights to the United States, regardless of vaccination status.
