California Woman Faked Her Own Kidnapping, Pleads Guilty In Court

Sherri Papini, of Redding, California, pleaded guilty on Monday for faking her own kidnapping.

In 2016, Papini's fake kidnapping led to a three-week search before she was found with bindings on her body, along with self-inflicted wounds, rashes and burn marks, according to ABC News. In 2020, she admitted that there was actually no kidnapping.

It was later revealed that Papini planned the fake kidnapping for more than a year and stayed with her boyfriend during the time she was missing (she was married). She reportedly has no explanation for why she did it.

Some speculate that Papini was mentally ill, she wanted to become famous or wanted to avoid some other "adverse consequence,... something like a divorce or being fired," ABC News explains.

Papini's sentencing is scheduled for July 11 and will reportedly be "on the low end... estimated to be between eight and fourteen months in custody" instead of the maximum of 25 years. She will also pay a restitution fee of $300,000 for the cost of her search and more.
