The California REAL ID deadline has once again been extended!

On May 7, 2025, all California residents will need to have a REAL ID in order to travel domestically on an airplane, enter secure government buildings, military facilities and more.

In order to apply for your REAL ID, you will need to compile several documents to verify your identity. According to NBC Bay Area, you will need to provide documents that prove your identity, your social security number, proof of residence and possibly an official name change document (if applicable).

How to apply:

  • Visit the DMV website and start an online application
  • You will need to upload several documents, including identification (Passport, birth certificate, etc.) and proof of residency (utility bills, medical bills, W-2, etc.). See the full list of acceptable documents here.
  • Make an appointment at the DMV! Bring your documents for verification and get ready to take a new photo
  • You should received your new REAL ID in a week or two

If you do not plan to travel or enter secure federal facilities, having a REAL ID is optional. Those who do not wish to apply for a REAL ID, but intend to travel or enter secure federal facilities, may also use their U.S. passport, U.S. passport card, military ID or other accepted forms of identification.
