California's Minimum Wage To Increase Come January 2023

Minimum wage is going up in California!

In 2023, all California cities will be raising the minimum wage to $15.50 per hour "for all businesses, regardless the number of workers," according to NBC Los Angeles. The Department of Industrial Relations (DIR) states, "The minimum wage is an obligation of the employer and cannot be waived by any agreement, including collective bargaining agreements." Some cities and counties will be raising their minimum wage even higher.

Starting January 1st, the following Bay Area cities will be raising their minimum wage to the following:

  • Belmont: $16.75
  • Burlingame: $16.47
  • Cupertino: $17.20
  • Daly City: $16.07
  • East Palo Alto: $16.50
  • El Cerrito: $17.35
  • Foster City: $16.50
  • Half Moon Bay: $16.45
  • Hayward: $16.34 (The payment for small employers in Hayward is the same as the $15.50 from the state of California.)
  • Menlo Park: $16.20
  • Mountain View: $18.15
  • Oakland: $15.97
  • Palo Alto: $17.25
  • Redwood City: $17.00
  • Richmond: $16.17
  • San Carlos: $16.32
  • San Jose: $17.00
  • San Mateo: $16.75
  • Santa Clara: $17.20
  • Santa Rosa: $17.06
  • Sonoma: $17.00 ($16.00 for small employers)
  • South San Francisco: $16.70
  • Sunnyvale: $17.95

Alameda, Berkeley, Emeryville, Milpitas and San Francisco previously raised their minimum wage back in July 2022.
