Be prepared! The Bay Area storm is expected to continue Thursday with showers to come through the weekend.

If your home floods, here are some Health and Safety Guidelines from the County of San Mateo:

  • Wear boots and gloves in flooded areas
  • Turn off the electrical switch is off and double check for damage to wires or appliances
  • Call 911 if you smell gas or suspect a gas leak. Then call PG&E at (800) 743-5000.
  • Warn your neighbors if you suspect a gas leak issue
  • Protect open cuts or sores from bacteria in the water. Seek medical attention if your wound becomes infected.
  • Keep children and pets away from flooded areas.
  • See a doctor immediately if you swallow flood water due to risk of a hepatitis A infection and other germs/bacteria.
  • Drink bottled water if you're unsure if your water source has been impacted.

After a flood, residents should clean and disinfect everything! Thoroughly clean surfaces where food is stored or prepared by using a soap and water mixture followed by a bleach and water mixture to disinfect. Dishes, utensils, etc. must be thoroughly washed and disinfected. Additionally, fans and dehumidifiers can help get rid of excess moisture. Be careful not to spread mold. Salvageable carpeting must be steam cleaned.

Lastly, be sure to contact your insurance company! Get more information here!
