With Winter well underway and major storms passing through the Bay Area, here's how you can prevent flooding in your neighborhood!
You can adopt a drain with San Francisco Water Power Sewer (SFPUC) aka San Francisco's Public Utilities Commission! The Adopt A Drain Program, in partnership with local residents, helps rainwater drain properly, reduces the risk of flooding, protects the environment from waste, keeps streets clean and more!
Residents who adopt drains are provided with safety gear, supplies and are periodically notified to clear drains before a storm. To clear the drain:
- Clear the drain before it starts raining.
- Dispose of trash, compost leaves and other natural material.
- Clear 10ft. of the drain on both sides.
- Report the drain to the City's Customer Service Center if there are any medical waste, needles, construction debris or if the drain is clogged beneath the gate.
If for any reason you would like to discontinue your service, you may "abandon" your drain anytime online.
