Unfortunately, it looks like the Oakland Zoo will not be reopening any time soon.
The East Bay zoo suffered severe damage from a sinkhole following the storm that hit the Bay Area on New Year's Eve. According to The Oaklandside, they originally had plans to reopen on January 17th, but that deadline is now unlikely as crews were unable to start repairs.
“At this point, it is unknown. It is at least a minimum of three weeks... The culvert and the road are our biggest challenge at this point, and letting the next storm pass by so that this work can take place when it’s a little bit drier," said Nik Dehejia, the zoo’s chief executive officer.
The sinkhole is reportedly stable and no further damage was done during the recent storms.
Dehejia also shared that the zoo's closure would cost them roughly $500,000 in revenue.
