Adopt don't shop! Several animal shelters in the Bay Area are overcrowded and need your help! Shelters have reportedly seen an increase in large dogs and are looking to find them homes as soon as possible.

Oakland Animal Services, Oakland's only open admission shelter, announced that there is an urgent need to adopt out 50 big dogs by Monday, January 16th. Adoption hours have been extended and the shelter will be open from 12pm noon to 5pm from now until Monday. Adoption fees have been waived for big dogs 25lbs+. "We’re asking the community to save an animal's life by adopting a dog. Those who want to help but cannot adopt are encouraged to foster a pet, which will help address the immediate crowding crisis," the shelter announced. Get all the details here.

Marin Humane is also holding a "Go Big AND Go Home" promotion, where adoption fees are waived for big dogs 30lbs+ through the month of January. Get more information here.

The San Jose Animal Care Center is also waiving all adoption fees and reclaiming fees for pets lost during the storms that have recently hit the Bay Area. NBC Bay Area reports that the storms have caused an increase in stray dogs. Residents have been asked to keep stray dogs for a minimum of 72 hours before bringing them into the shelter. This will give them time "to free up space."

If you're looking for a dog to join your family, now's the time to take the next step! Visit one of the shelters listed above or another shelter near you to give a deserving dog a new home.
