In an effort to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, the U.S. Army on Monday announced it's temporarily stopped sending recruits to basic training.
"One of [our] main focuses is to develop leaders by accessing, training and educating Soldiers," says General Paul E. Funk II, commander of the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command. "We have to do so responsibly, and we've already begun protecting those currently in our ranks with social-distanced-enabled training, reduced movement of our Soldiers and trainees, and increased screening of those moving across our commands."
The hold will remain in place for two weeks, Funk says. Recruits already participating in basic training will continue to do so, although they will be "closely monitored," he adds.
Why are recruits who are already in basic training less likely to contract the coronavirus than newer recruits are? Shouldn't everything that involves large groups of people be stopped?
